Don’t Just Claim Sweat Protection on Your Antiperspirant Products. Laboratory Testing Is the Answer!

Antiperspirant is a personal care product specifically formulated to reduce the amount of sweat released by the body, particularly in the underarm area.

The Difference Between Antiperspirant and Deodorant

Many people still consider antiperspirants and deodorants to be the same, even though they serve different functions. Deodorants work by inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria or masking unpleasant smells with fragrance.

Aluminum salts are selected because they are the most effective substances for reducing sweat flow compared to other ingredients. These compounds are water-soluble and have been widely used for decades in personal care products with a good safety profile when used as directed.

How Antiperspirants Work to Reduce Sweat

The mechanism of aluminum-based active ingredients in antiperspirants is quite specific. When applied to the skin, aluminum salts such as aluminum chlorohydrate form temporary gel-like plugs of aluminum hydroxide polymers within the sweat ducts, preventing sweat from reaching the skin surface.

These substances are soluble at very low pH levels within the product formulation; however, after application to the skin, they form chemically inert complexes with basic components of sweat and skin.

This layer functions as a barrier to sweat flow, significantly reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the surface of the skin. As a result, the underarm area remains dry and sweat does not penetrate clothing.

This blocking effect is temporary and reversible, as the gel layer naturally sheds during the skin’s regeneration process.

Proper Use of Antiperspirant for Optimal Results

To ensure optimal performance, proper application is essential. Antiperspirants should be applied in moderate amounts at night before bedtime.

During the night, sweat gland activity is at its lowest, allowing aluminum-based active ingredients to more effectively form a barrier within the sweat ducts. A thin and even application is sufficient to provide protection throughout the day.

In the morning, the underarm area can be cleansed as usual without removing the antiperspirant effect that has already formed.

Side Effects of Antiperspirants and Precautions

Although beneficial, antiperspirants may cause side effects in some individuals, particularly skin irritation. This irritation can occur due to mild chemical reactions between aluminum salts and sweat, creating an acidic condition on the skin’s surface.

The risk of irritation increases when antiperspirants are applied to sensitive, injured, or freshly shaved skin. Additionally, added ingredients such as fragrance and alcohol may trigger contact dermatitis in individuals with sensitive skin.

When used properly and according to skin condition, the benefits of antiperspirants far outweigh the risks. In addition to keeping underarms dry, antiperspirants play an important role in preventing body odor.

Body odor occurs when bacteria break down components of sweat in a moist environment. By controlling sweat, the growth of odor-causing bacteria can be naturally reduced.
