The Threat of Dangerous Herbal Medicine Circulation, IML Testing and Research Supports BPOM’s Appeal to Medicine Producers in Indonesia
Bandung,06/09 – The development of the herbal product industry in Indonesia is rapidly advancing. With the increasing demand for health products based on natural raw materials, many companies are competing to release herbal products that are considered safer and have fewer side effects compared to synthetic drugs.
According to a press release from BPOM issued on April 30, 2024, BPOM successfully secured 8 types of herbal medicine products that are dangerous due to containing prohibited substances or contaminants that exceed safe limits. According to the Acting Head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), L. Rizka Andalusia, “The findings of herbal medicine products that do not meet the requirements are the result of monitoring conducted by BPOM from December 2023 to January 2024.”
Every product that circulates in the market must undergo a series of strict quality and safety tests. This test is necessary to ensure that the products reaching consumers not only provide optimal benefits but also do not pose any risk to the health and safety of users. IML Testing and Research stated, “We support BPOM in urging business actors to ensure that their herbal medicine products contain raw materials used in accordance with established standards. Producers have a significant responsibility to ensure that the products they distribute meet applicable quality and safety standards. IML Testing and Research supports the circulation of quality and safe products in Indonesia.”
IML Testing and Research provides toxicity testing services for herbal medicines. Toxicity testing is a series of tests and studies conducted to assess the potential toxicity or harmful effects of a substance on living organisms. In addition to toxicity testing, IML Testing and Research also offers efficacy testing for herbal medicines. Efficacy testing is the evaluation process to determine the extent to which herbal medicine can produce the desired effects or those claimed by the manufacturer itself.
The importance of this testing is felt not only by consumers but also by producers who want to maintain their reputation and market trust. Unsafe or low-quality products can pose various risks such as product recalls, legal actions, and loss of consumer trust. With laboratory testing services at IML Testing and Research, manufacturers can be more confident that their products meet the established quality and safety requirements. IML Testing and Research also makes it easier for herbal medicine producers by offering free consultations regarding the necessary testing directly with our team of experts.
