A Closer Look at Ear Drops

The ear is an important organ that plays a vital role in hearing and maintaining body balance. Unfortunately, ear health often receives little attention. In fact, various conditions such as infections, inflammation, and the buildup of earwax can cause discomfort and even reduce hearing quality.
One common form of treatment for these problems is the use of ear drops. Ear drops are liquid pharmaceutical preparations specifically designed to be instilled into the external ear canal to provide a local therapeutic effect.
Unlike oral medications, ear drops work directly at the affected site, allowing faster relief and a lower risk of systemic side effects. Ear drops can help treat pain, inflammation, infection, and earwax blockage.
Types of Ear Drops
In general, ear drops can be classified into several types based on their ingredients and functions.
Antibiotic ear drops
Antibiotic ear drops, which are used to treat bacterial infections, particularly conditions such as otitis externa. Otitis externa is an inflammation of the external ear canal and is often referred to as swimmer’s ear because it commonly occurs in tropical regions or when water becomes trapped in the ear.
Antibiotics commonly recommended for the treatment of otitis externa include a combination of polymyxin B, neomycin, and hydrocortisone at a dose of 3–4 drops administered four times daily, as well as ofloxacin at a dose of 5 drops used twice daily. Studies have shown that topical antibiotic therapy is the treatment of choice, as it effectively inhibits the growth of infection-causing bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
Combination ear drops containing antibiotics and corticosteroids
Combination ear drops containing antibiotics and corticosteroids. This combination not only eliminates bacteria but also helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain.
Clinical studies have demonstrated that such combinations can accelerate symptom improvement compared to antibiotic therapy alone. One commonly used example is a combination of ciprofloxacin and hydrocortisone, administered as 3 drops twice daily.
Ear drops for softening earwax (cerumenolytics)
Ear drops for softening earwax (cerumenolytics). These are used to soften hardened and accumulated earwax. If left untreated, earwax buildup can cause a feeling of fullness in the ear, pain, and temporary hearing impairment.
Olive oil–based ear drops are commonly used as a gentle natural option to soften hardened earwax. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide work by releasing oxygen, which helps break down the structure of earwax, making it easier to remove.
In addition, sodium bicarbonate can help dissolve earwax without an oil-based formulation, while glycerin helps soften earwax and maintain moisture in the ear canal, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive ears.
In addition, antifungal ear drops are also available and are used to treat fungal ear infections caused by organisms such as Candida or Aspergillus.
How to Use Ear Drops
Although ear drops are easy to use, proper administration is essential. Before instilling the drops, the bottle should be warmed in the hands to bring it closer to body temperature. The head should then be tilted, and the drops administered according to the recommended dosage, allowing them to remain in the ear for several minutes to ensure optimal effectiveness.
It is important to remember that not all ear conditions should be treated with ear drops without proper guidance. If there is suspicion of a perforated eardrum or if symptoms do not improve, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional promptly.
