A solution is a liquid pharmaceutical preparation that contains one or more chemical substances molecularly dissolved in an appropriate solvent or a mixture of mutually miscible solvents, such as water and alcohol. Depending on its application, solutions can be intended for oral use, ear drops, eye drops, or topical application on the skin.
Based on their form, solutions can be classified into syrups, elixirs, tinctures, and oral drops.
Syrup
Syrup is a solution preparation that contains sugar, which serves as a carrier for the medication. In terms of its components, syrup contains active ingredients, sucrose as a sweetening agent, purified water as a solvent, flavoring agents, coloring agents, and other excipients that help maintain the stability of the drug.
Elixir
Elixir is a solution preparation containing a solvent that is a mixture of water and alcohol, intended for oral use. Compared to syrup, elixirs are less sweet and have lower viscosity due to their lower sugar content. In terms of solubility, elixirs are better at dissolving various components compared to syrups because they are mixed solvents and more stable in maintaining solutes in solution form.
Tincture
Tincture is a solution containing alcohol or a mixture of water and alcohol as the main solvent, made from plant materials or chemical substances with an alcohol content ranging from 15% to 80%. The alcohol content serves to protect the preparation from microbial growth and helps maintain substances soluble in alcohol in solution form.
Those are some types of drugs in solution form that we often encounter every day. Before you can consume the drugs on the market, they must go through several stages of laboratory testing to obtain a distribution permit certificate from BPOM. Drug testing can be done in trusted laboratories such as IML Research.
Oral drops
Oral drops are liquid preparations of medication that are given orally by dropping them directly into the oral cavity or under the tongue. These preparations are usually used to provide precise doses of medication.
